I know this is super late, but I figured getting in a 2015 recap is an important part of putting last year in the past, and focusing on this year. I’ve had so many things going on in my life that writing my blog posts have been next to impossible. Luckily, I’m almost done putting the pieces of my crazy existence back together, and my amazing friends and family have been the best support I could’ve ever asked for.
Now let me tell you about the madness of 2015.
So the year had a lot of downswings but there were some pretty fabulous moments that made everything seem minor in comparison, but they didn’t last nearly long enough.
In January 2015, I got some pretty difficult edits for my book. So difficult it would take the rest of the year to do them actually. Oh, and I got pushed to 2017 as a release date. But the good news? I hung out with my Wilkies at Wilkes University and watched a special screening of The Duff, which was produced by Susan Cartsonis, the fabulous producer who bought film rights for my book!
And the most important part of January 2015? I picked up my furbaby Lizzie Bennett on New Year’s Eve! She’s the best cat in the world, I swear.
In February 2015, I was in a nine-car pileup that made the news. My car was totaled and if it wasn’t for my father offering for me to buy his car for half the value, I would’ve been in the deepest doo-doo ever.
In March 2015, I attended the Liberty States Fiction Writers conference after developing a new respect and love for Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series. I had to listen to them on audio to love her use of language. Seriously romance readers, if you are looking for a good hot/sexy read, this is the one for you. At the conference I met Sylvia and life was blissful again.
I also got a new tattoo!!
April 2015 I focused on spending time with friends because my college roommate from Freshman year turned 30! Ali is one of the most important people in my life and this month was dedicated to her. 🙂
May 2015. Here it is. The big month. The month that made 2015 so much better than every other month in the year. I turned 30 in the beginning of May, and celebrated spa and good food with some favorite friends. Then at the end of May, I was supposed to go on this weekend beach trip with the family, but three hours before we were supposed to leave, my sister surprised me. I was going to LONDON!!!! I have never been, and always wanted to go. London was the best because I got to share it with my sister who totally shocked the hell out of me. lol.
June 2015: One of my besties took me to Governor’s Ball to see the Decemberists and Vance Joy! Afterwards we were super posh and ate and drank at a rooftop bar in the city overlooking the skyline while talking with some dudes who worked in Finance and who didn’t have their lives together. It was so much fun.
I also went to West Palm Beach for a family friend’s wedding. It was three days long and on the PGA National Golf Course. Nothing like Indian food, music, and random trips to Publix.
July 2015: I was back at Wilkes to read as an alumni at the ten year anniversary! I also taught a workshop with Wilkes buddy Jen Bokal.
RWA was in NYC and lucky me, I was chosen to speak at the RWA National Conference for two separate workshops! It was fabulous. I enjoyed awesome time with friends who I haven’t seen in so long. And I got to meet some fabulous industry folks!
Last collage of #rwa15 I promise. As we're sluggishly getting ready to check out of hotel rooms, check back into our real lives and bid adieu to the national romance writers conference, I have to give a shout out to Sonali and Suleikha for being so awesome and teaching the Bollywood Basics workshop with me, and of course, to @caridadpineiro for being my partner in crime at the Organized Writer workshop. In romance there is a well known concept of chosen family that we all talk about. I love my given family, but at the close of #RWA15, I'm overflowing with love for my chosen family, too. Thanks for making this journey so amazing. 💗#desi #sunday #RITA15 #magnum #selfie #love #fun
August 2015: I’ll be honest with you, the only thing I remember about August is going down to the shore to spend some time with my amazing friend Charity and her equally amazing daughter Sam who owns the coolest Surf Shop. (OG Surf and Skate). I also got a new housemate! Smita has seriously been a blessing in disguise. She’s one of the sweetest human beings I’ve ever met.
Oh, I did go to that Yankees game. And had box seats. Because, you know, I’m a baller like that. haha.
September 2015: So not only is it my sister’s birthday month, but me and my writing buds went down to Cape May to spend a long weekend at this house rental. We worked on projects, drank tons of wine coolers, and like the nerds we are, played games late into the night. That was seriously an amazing weekend because what’s more fun than hanging out with the people you WANT to create memories with?
I also took a cake class at Carlos’s bakery! My cake ended up looking like a teenage mutant ninja turtle, but that didn’t matter because it was freakin’ DELICIOUS.
October 2015: Fall doesn’t start for me until I go apple picking. Which is exactly what I did at the fall festival at Terhune Orchards in Princeton, NJ. Can anyone say Apple Spice Donuts? haha. I also finally dragged all of said nerd friends to a Halloween dance party at one of my favorite restaurants in Jersey. I unfortunately had to dance for all of us. It’s cool though. I had tons of fun.
Oh! And my second furbaby came home! Nancey Drew the dog is a Chihuahua who loves people but hates other dogs. She’s super excitable at 6 in the morning, but sleeps during the day.
November 2015: We had a crockpot themed Thanksgiving and my mashed potatoes were the bomb. Enough said. We also had the annual Sharma turkey trot. Lily, my two year old cousin, was the star of the show of course.
December 2015: Not only did I have my annual ‘It’s Christmas, Charlie Brown!’ Christmas Party, but Christmas was at my house this year and I couldn’t have been happier to end the year with family.
So overall, 2015 wasn’t TOOO bad, but I’m still hoping for a better 2016, even though it has started out with a house flood, emergency root canal, car breakdown, breakup, and work issues. It’s only the beginning of the year though, and for those of you in the same situation, let’s watch a bunch of positive TED videos and go forth with awesomeness!
Happy 2016, guys. Because your New Year starts when you want it to.
