“Bones: The Heart of the Matter”

I recently completed a full four season marathon of the TV show “Bones.” I wasn’t really into it until I started catching an episode or two on my down time in the middle of the day between classes. I ordered season one on Netflix and I couldn’t stop after that.

Now, I’m completely caught up and excited for season five to start on September 17th. So why are my major issues with ‘Bones’ and why do I love it so much?

Issue One: I am totally in love with Dr. Zach Addy and the fact that they let him go was terrible. First of all, they should have just killed him off or something. Not left him alive in some mental institution where he’s actually innocent of a crime, therefore sparking hope in some serious Zach Addy fans. I hope they bring him back.

Second. There was absolutely no reason to break up Angela and Hodgins! I mean, they were fabulous together. I think that they are going to get back together in the fifth season, but Angie sleeps with someone Bones disapproves of first to end her six month celibacy test. I hope it’s Hodgins and not someone who is completely off the rocker, ya know?

I also don’t like how they completely got rid of Dr. Daniel Goodman without saying a word about him. Come on! He was a fabulous character. I definitely like how Cam replaced his position as head of forensics, but Goodman is still part of the Jeffersonian. He’s supposed to hang out in an episode or two.

Okay, now for the good stuff. A fabulous addition to the cast was Dr. Sweets. I totally love him. He’s one of my favorite characters now next to Booth, Bones, Hodgins, Angela and Cam. What fantastic comic relief, ya know?

Aside from the cast additions and subtracts, there is the basic sexual tension between Booth and Bones that totally keeps me hanging on to the edge of my seat. The whole reason why I love romance, why I write romance, is because the sexual tension is so unbelievably addictive, it’s like a drug.

I can’t stop! I know that in season five, Bones and Booth are going to have more scripted kisses, and a higher level of awareness with each other. That’s what I read in the spoilers anyway. Last season, Bones wanted to have a child with Booth but that’s going to be put on the back-burner because of Booth’s surgery. I wish it wasn’t because how AWESOME would it be if Bones was pregnant? Amazing. Anyway, I’ll keep watching and I’ll keep posting. I can’t wait until the season starts now! I’m officially hooked!

OMG! OMG! OMG!!! I just finished it too after picking it up midway through the last season. Shel & I went back and watched all of them on DVD (Okay we missed a few because we didn’t realize that we needed to flip the disc.

You have sooo many good beefs! And they’re mine too. I entirely LOVE Zach. I loved him even more once I found out he was born in Jersey! Yeah, baby. I hated what they did to him. And I don’t think they prefaced it enough to make it believable. I mean Zach (in spite of being a genius in his own right) came from a stable, loving family with 4 older brothers and 2 younger sisters. They loved him. His mother encouraged his singing (and he has a loverly voice, too.) He had friendship in Hodgins and mentorship in Tempe. So, all of a sudden he throws it all away for the “master?” Then on TOP if it, I started hating Hodgins for putting all his conspiracy crap into Zach’s head. Nope. I didn’t buy it. Zach may have been that easily influenced as a grad student, but as an adult and expert in his own right, I didn’t get the regression. Not at all.

The only thing I can think of was that his character arc was staying flatter than others. I think the writers missed some great opportunities with his character. I mean, Zach head over heels in love. Totally understanding it, but not understanding it. And to leave him in an asylum? Am I to believe that mega-bucks Hodgins would not hire the BEST lawyer in the world to get Zach out and back to the Jeffersonian???? What the heck kind of friend is that???

I hope they bring back Zach. I think an endless parade of quirky grad students will get old. (Think of Murphy Brown and the secretaries she couldn’t keep.)

AND…The only way I really buy Angela and Hodgins breaking it off is if Angela called Hodgins on his hypocrisy. I mean, he’s forever going on about the priveleges of the rich and yet, he is one! Did he sign away his fortune? Lose it all to Madoff? Can you expect me to believe that at no time he took advantage of his station in life to get what he wanted? Actually Zach, Booth, or Cam could challenge him on that since their roots are more middle class. Tempe is too rich with her writing contracts to fall into that category anymore.

Dr Goodman should have been written out by saying he was returning to his first love of archeology and returning to the field. That would have made sense.

Sweets….what can I say? Love him. Love his backstory. I see some great character growth in the future for him. I don’t get Daisy, though.

I can’t comment on Booth other than to say…he’s perfect.
