“Eyes Like Stars” Contest

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to give away the copy of an arc I have of “Eyes Like Stars” by Lisa Mantchev. It just came out this week and it’s AMAZING. Check out my review of the book on Examiner.com.

I knew I couldn’t just…GIVE it away, though. It’s too good for that! So…I’m having my first official contest! Woohoo!! *cheers* *clapping* *happy sitcom laughter in the background*

The contest starts today and it’ll end August First. I’ll announce the Winner August second. Here’s what you have to do:

“Eyes Like Stars” has a lot to do with the theater. Post a comment about your favorite play or theater moment. What did you go see? Why was it your favorite? Post your story below and I’ll pick one randomly to receive the arc. Once that happens, the winner can send me their mailing address and booya! You get a copy of ELS! At this point, it’s just US or Canada only. Sorry you foreigners, but postage can get pretty pricey.

Fun, right? I thought so.

So let me start (even though I’m not allowed to win).
My favorite theater moment was when I went to see Def Jam SLAM poetry on stage. It wasn’t a play but it was the most powerful performance I had ever witness. These twenty somethings were passionately yelling and screaming these words that were engraved on their souls. It was really amazing. After that night, I went and picked up every DEF JAM cd and book I could get my hands on and I was hooked ever since. :-)

Your turn!

  1. I have 2 favorite theater moments and they both involve my high school best friend Amy. One was when we went to another high school to see their production of Fiddler on the Roof. We brought our own snacks, Cheetos to be precise. Well, somehow the whole bag of chips slipped out of our hands and slid down the auditorium, scattering neon orange crisps the entire way. It wasn’t quiet and it wasn’t pretty.

The second memorable theater moment was when I was in our high school musical The Music Man and I was doing my thing up on stage when suddenly this loud snort-laughter filled the theater. It was my friend Amy, who was in the audience, and her laughter was contagious. It made me feel great to be regarded as so hilarious. :)

My mother and I took a weekend a few years ago to visit NYC. We’d decided to go to a show and couldn’t agree on anything, so we decided on the Light in the Piazza which neither of us knew anything about. It was amazing. We’d been to the theater before in KC, but you needed binoculars to see the stage. In this theater you could see every facial expression. It was tight and close and…intimate. The story was beautiful. The music was wonderful. I loved it. I guess it wasn’t a moment. It was just an experience. It was great.

Oh my favorite theatre moment was either skipping my hs prom to go see Hugh Jackman in the “Boy from Oz” and meeting him after the show. He was so genial and fabulous in the show. It was especially fun when he hecklled the two boys in front of me when they screamed “Wolvie no!!!!!!” when Jackman’s character Peter Allen makes out with a man. Then again when he informs the audience how to properly give a lap dance and demonstrate how to have great sex. It was raunchy, but too funny.

My other great theatre moment was sitting in on Bradley Cooper, Kristen Johnston, and Reg Rogers at last summer’s world premiere of Theresa Rebeck’s “The Understudy” at Williamstown Theatre Festival, which will be making it’s off-Broadway debut next month. It was an amazing show and incredibly satisfying for me to see because I was one of the carpenter’s on the show and a lot of sweat and tears (thankfully no blood) went into that production, so it was extremely gratifying to see that it was actually good.

Okay, so my most memorable theater experience was probably this past february (specifically valentines day) i went to go see the touring company of RENT when they came to Jersey with one of my closest friends, Era. Some of the original cast members were in this tour including the original mark and roger. it had to be the best performance of this show that i had seen. It was amazing watching anthony rapp (mark) and adam pascal (roger) portraying the roles that made them famous all those years ago. After the show, Era and I went to the stage door to wait for Anthony Rapp to get his autograph and a possible picture with him. At this point in the evening its beyond freezing and were surrounded by annoying little tweens who think that theyre rentheads just cause theyve seen the movie a whole bunch of times. So Anthony Rapp comes out pretty quickly and starts making his way down the line of people. He’s not really stopping too long with each mini group of fans. He’s basically just signing programs and his book as he’s walking. That is until he gets to Era and me near the end. He remembers us from an event in allentown from like 2 years ago that we had gone to. Even though he obviously had some place to head off to he still took a few extra minutes to talk to us and see how things were going as he’s pretty awesome like that. That night overall was beyond awesome.

  6. I found your link on Facebook at a mutual friend’s page. That book cover grabbed my attention. BEAUTIFUL!

I would have to say my fave theater moment was when I was in fourth grade. We went to the Wheeling, WV Symphony and watched a musical play. It was a sci-fi theme, and to this day it still makes no sense to me, lol, but the highlight of it was when the heroine’s shiny space suit ripped out in the crotch. Talk about shocking a bunch of ten year olds! Every time the hero would whirl her around in the air doing a particular dance move, we got a close up of shiny white panties, LOLOL! Thank God she was wearing undies!

My favorite theater moment was the first musical I ever saw. I don’t remember what the show was, only that I was stunned and captivated. I literally sat on the edge of my seat the entire time and couldn’t take my eyes off the stage. Fortunately I feel like this with every new musical that I see, so I get to recapture my favorite moment at the beginning of every new show.
