Writing Wednesday: Great Writing Books

As some of you know, I went on the PLRW Retreat at Sea last week. One of the topics that came up was great writing resources. A highly recommended resource by Deidre Knight was Steven Pressfield’s ‘The War of Art.’ This got me thinking to other great books that helped me with my writing. Here are a few that I think everyone should have on their research shelf:
Steven King’s ‘On Writing’. If you don’t own this book and you’re a writer, shame on you. It’s one of the best inspirational and advice books out there. I’m in love with it and every time I need a bit of inspiration, this is the book that I pull off my shelf.
Technically, she doesn’t have a ‘book’ per say, but Margie Lawson’s “Deep Edits” college level handouts are AMAZING. You can get them from her website for a small fee, and you’re able to download 9 lectures. Each lecture is almost 60 pages and you work through your novel while working through each lecture. One of my friends is a huge Margie Lawson fan after I introduced her to ‘Deep Edits’ and Lauren’s work is proof that Margie Lawson will change your writing style.

Donald Maass’s ‘The Breakout Novel Workbook.’ I’m specifically referring to ‘The Workbook’ here, not ‘The Breakout Novel.’ The workbook is a great tool to use when enhancing your writing skill and technique. It has great advice and writing exercises that will revamp your writing without you knowing it.
So these are my favs! Does anyone else have any great writing books they’d like to share? Happy writing, all!
